Vólos

City and port in Thessaly, eastern central Greece, capital of the department of Magnisia, situated on the Pagasitic Gulf, an inlet of the Aegean Sea, southeast of Larisa; population (2001 est) 90,000. Vólos is the main port for the export of Thessalian produce, including grain, cotton, sugar, and olive oil. Industries include the manufacture of textiles, bricks, and cement. Vólos is the seat of an archbishop. The town was rebuilt after being badly damaged by earthquakes in 1954–55.

Vólos is situated on the site of the ancient city of Iolkos, from where in mythology Jason and the Argonauts set sail in their expedition to find the Golden Fleece. After Thessaly's annexation by Greece in 1881, Volos expanded rapidly as an outlet for agricultural produce and chrome.
