vena cava

Either of the two great veins of the trunk, returning deoxygenated blood to the right atrium of the heart. The superior vena cava, beginning where the arches of the two innominate veins join high in the chest, receives blood from the head, neck, chest, and arms; the inferior vena cava, arising from the junction of the right and left common iliac veins, receives blood from all parts of the body below the diaphragm.
