Vaal

River in South Africa, the chief tributary of the Orange River. It rises in the Drakensberg mountain range, on the border of Swaziland, and is 805 km/500 mi long.

The Vaal rises in Mount Klipstapel, flows west and southwest along the northern border of Free State, and crosses Griqualand West. The Vaal Barrage, 30 km/19 mi downstream from Vereeniging, retains the river for 67 km/42 mi forming a reservoir holding 63.6 million cubic metres/83.2 million cubic yards to supply the Witwatersrand. Under the Vaal-Harts irrigation scheme 364 sq km/140 sq mi are irrigated; groundnuts and wheat are important crops.
