Vaasa

Capital of Vaasa province, western Finland; population (2002) 61,100. Situated on the Klemetso peninsula on the Gulf of Bothnia, this port is an important regional centre with food processing, engineering, textile, and chemical industries. Wheat is exported and there is a ferry service to Umeå in Sweden.

Vaasa

Coastal province of western Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia; area 39,010 sq km/15,062 sq mi; population (1998) 56,600. It has flat, fertile farmland near the coast. The thickly forested interior has suffered severe economic decline, but timber is still produced.
