Vacaville

Town in Solano County, west-central California; population (1990) 71,500. It is situated at the eastern base of the Vaca Mountains, 48 km/30 mi southwest of Sacramento. Founded in 1850 on cattle range land, it is a processing centre for plums, cherries, tomatoes, corn, and citrus fruits raised in the surrounding valley. The California Medical Facility, a state prison, is to the south. Travis Air Force Base, 11 km/7 mi to the southeast, near Fairfield, also provides employment. Vacaville has more than tripled in population since 1970.
