pyrolysis

Decomposition of a substance by heating it to a high temperature in the absence of air. The process is used to burn and dispose of old tyres, for example, without contaminating the atmosphere.

Vacuum pyrolysis of PTFE seems to give the highest yields of desired fluorocarbons (TFE, HFP) for chemical recycling but has to cope with a number of disadvantages and is not used on a technical scale.
Commonly used methods are vacuum pyrolysis (ASTM D1416) and the Leco furnace.
Pyrocycling(TM) is an innovative technology involving vacuum pyrolysis of forest biomass waste, to convert products such as bark into high added value products.
