Vairochana

Cosmic Buddha, Dainichi in Japan; central to esoteric Buddhism.

He is usually depicted at the centre of mandalas. In Shingon Buddhism, all gods, all objects, and all thoughts are manifestations of Dainichi (‘great Sun’). Outside esoteric Buddhism, he is known in Japan as Birushana, and in Ryōbu Shinto is twinned with the Sun goddess Amaterasu.
