Opera by Tchaikovsky (libretto by Y P Polonsky, based on Gogol's Christmas Eve), first produced in St Petersburg, on 6 December 1876; a revised version entitled Cherevichki/The Little Boots was produced in Moscow, on 31 January 1887. It is also known as Oxana's Caprices. At Oxana's request, Vakula flies on the back of the Devil to St Petersburg, to claim from the Tsaritsa a pair of high-heeled leather boots.
