Val-de-Marne

Département in the Ile-de-France region of France, southeast of Paris; area 244 sq km/94 sq mi; population (1999 est) 1,227,300. The département contains the confluence of the rivers Marne and Seine, and is largely urbanized. Employment is in manufacturing industries and offices, with many workers commuting to central Paris. Rural areas are used for intensive agriculture and for recreation. Val-de-Marne contains the Rungis wholesale market (replacing Les Halles in central Paris) and Orly airport. The chief town and administrative centre is Créteil.
