Val-d'Or

Town in the east Abitibi region, southwest Québec, Canada; population (1991) 23,800. It is located 78 km/48 mi east-southeast of Rouyn-Noranda, at the headwaters of the River Harricana. Developed during a 1930s gold rush, it still has some of the richest mines in the province. Local lumbering and farming as well as some diversified industry are also important in this regional service centre. The Bourlamaque Miners' Village, a former Company Town, is now a historic site.
