Valdai Hills

Small forested plateau in the Russian Federation, between St Petersburg and Moscow, where the Volga and western Dvina rivers rise. The Viking founders of the Russian state used it as a river route centre to reach the Baltic, Black, Caspian, and White seas. From the 15th century it was dominated by Moscow.
