Valdese

Town in Burke County, west North Carolina; population (1990) 3,900. It is located 11 km/7 mi east of Morganton, in the Piedmont and the east foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was established in 1893 by a community of Provençal-speaking Waldensians, a Protestant group fleeing religious persecution in north Italy. Over time the inhabitants affiliated with American (Presbyterian) churches, and their farms and vineyards gave way to textile plants; knitwear is now an economic mainstay.

The Valdesi retain an importance out of all proportion to their numbers, not least in a more ecumenical age when they have good relations with many Roman Catholic dioceses and even hear an occasional soundbite from their Moderator picked up by Vatican Radio.
