Valdivia, Pedro de (c. 1497-1554)Spanish explorer who travelled to Venezuela about 1530 and accompanied Francisco Pizarro on his second expedition to Peru. He then went south into Chile, where he founded the cities of Santiago in 1541 and Valdivia in 1544. In 1552 he crossed the Andes to explore the Negro River. He was killed by Araucanian Indians. |
