Valdosta

Town and administrative headquarters of Lowndes County, south Georgia; population (1990) 39,800. It is 23 km/14 mi from the Florida state line. It is an important centre for the tobacco, timber, and cattle industries, and a naval stores (especially turpentine) market. Manufactures include textiles and metal goods. Small fishing lakes to the south bring tourists. Moody Air Force Base is 19 km/12 mi north-northeast. Valdosta State College dates from 1906.

The town was founded as Troupville; it was relocated in 1859 to its site near the area's first railway, the Savannah-Mobile, when it was renamed.
