Valen, (Olav) Fartein (1887–1952)

Norwegian composer. He studied languages at Oslo University, but later entered the Conservatory, finishing his studies with Max Reger at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. In 1925–35 he worked in the music department of the library of Oslo University, but then received a government grant for composition.

Works

Choral

three sets of motets and other choral works.

Orchestral

five symphonies (1937–51), Sonetto di Michelangelo, To Hope (after Keats), Pastorale, Epithalamion, Le cimetière marin (after P Valéry), La isla en las calmas, Ode to Solitude for orchestra; piano concerto, violin concerto (1940); six works for soprano and orchestra.

Chamber

two string quartets (1928–31), piano trio, serenade for five wind instruments; violin and piano sonata; two sonatas, variations, and other works for piano; organ music; songs.
