Valentin, Moïse

    0.07 sec.

Valentin, Moïse (1591-1634)

French painter who worked in Rome. He painted religious subjects and scenes of popular life, working in the style of Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio. The Martyrdom of SS Processus and Martinian 1629-30 (Vatican, Rome), copied in mosaic in St Peter's, is his only certainly authenticated work.

He was a pupil of Simon Vouet. Other works thought to be by Valentin are the Fortunet-Teller (Louvre, Paris), a favourite picture of Louis XIV; Judith (Musée des Augustins, Toulouse); and Brawling Soldiers (Alte Pinakothek, Munich).
