Valentine

British medium tank of World War II, so named because it was approved for production on St Valentine's Day 1938. It was first used in Operation Crusader in North Africa 1941 and soon acquired a reputation for reliability.

Weighing 17 tons, it was initially fitted with a 2-pounder (40 mm) gun but this was later replaced by a 6-pounder (57 mm) weapon. It was not used in Europe, though a conversion into a tank destroyer, mounting a 17 pounder gun, was of considerable value. After North Africa it saw service in Madagascar and on the Arakan front in Burma.
