Vallejo

City and port in Solano County, north-central California, USA, at the mouth of the Napa River on San Pablo Bay, 48 km/30 mi northeast of San Francisco; population (1996 est) 109,600. It is a processing and commercial centre for a rich agricultural hinterland; flour, fruit, meat, and dairy foods are prepared. Shipyards are sited in the port. Other industries include lumbering, oil-refining, and the manufacture of iron. Just offshore, Mare Island is the largest US naval base on the North American Pacific coast. The city is home to the California Maritime Academy (1929).

Vallejo was California's capital 1852–53.
