Valley City

Town and administrative headquarters of Barnes County, east North Dakota; population (1990) 7,200. It is situated on the Sheyenne River, 89 km/55 mi west of Fargo. After the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1872, it developed as an agricultural trading centre. It now has a flour mill and deals in grain, livestock, and dairy products. Valley City State University (1889) specializes in training teachers.

Bald Hill Dam, a flood control project on the Sheyenne River, created the 43 km/27 mi-long Lake Ashtabula, a popular recreational site 18 km/11 mi northwest of the city.
