Valles Marineris

Complex system of rift valleys and canyons on the surface of Mars. It was first delineated by the Mariner 9 spacecraft, which surveyed the planet from its orbit in 1971. It is 4,500 km/2,800 mi long and up to 8 km/5 mi deep. Part of the system is visible from Earth-bound telescopes as a dark streak known as Coprates.
