Valparaiso

Town and administrative headquarters of Porter County, northwest Indiana; population (1990) 24,400. It is located 29 km/18 mi southeast of Gary and 19 km/12 mi south of Lake Michigan. The trading and distribution centre of a farming, poultry raising, and dairy area, it has manufactures including auto parts, steel, magnets, ball and roller bearings, food processing machines, and processed food. It is home to Valparaiso University (1859) and Valparaiso Technical Institute (1934).
