Vampyr, Der

Opera by Lindpaintner (libretto by C M Heigel, based on John William Polidori's story, published in 1819 and thought to be by Byron, and more directly on a French melodrama by Charles Nodier, P F A Carmouche, and A de Jouffroy), produced in Stuttgart on 21 September 1828. Opera by Heinrich Marschner (libretto by W A Wohlbrück, based on the sources above), produced in Leipzig on 29 March 1828. In the story, the newly created vampire Lord Ruthven must sacrifice three girls to postpone Satan's claim on his soul. Janthe and Emmy fall victim, but Malvina escapes the fangs.
