Van Buren

Town and administrative headquarters of Crawford County, northwest Arkansas; population (1990) 15,000. It is situated on the Arkansas River, 8 km/5 mi northeast of Fort Smith. The local economy is now focused primarily on shipping and processing farm produce, including spinach, peaches, and strawberries.

Settled in 1818, Van Buren was a trading post and outfitting point for westbound settlers. In 1873 it became a junction for railway and river traffic. The discovery of natural gas in the 1900s attracted glass manufacturers and smelters.
