Van Cortlandt, Stephanus (1643–1700)

Dutch-American colonial official. A colonel in New York provincial militia, he served on the governor's council and in 1677 became the first native-born mayor of New York. He was a local judge 1677–91 and justice of the provincial supreme court 1691–1700.

Born in New Amsterdam (New York from 1664), Van Cortlandt was the son of a prominent family of Dutch settlers. He was a prosperous merchant and expanded his landholdings after the English conquest of the colony in 1664.
