Van Diemen's Land

Van Diemen's Land

Former name (1642–1855) of Tasmania, Australia. It was named by the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman after the governor general of the Dutch East Indies, Anthony van Diemen. The name Tasmania was used from the 1840s and officially adopted in 1856.
