Van der Westhuizen, Joost (1971– )

South African rugby union player. A scrum-half, renowned for his solo runs and try-scoring ability, he was a key member of the South Africa side that won the 1995 World Cup on home soil. He made his international debut in 1993 and finished his career as South Africa's most capped player and their record try scorer with 38 tries. He was appointed South African captain in August 1998, and led the side to third place at the 1999 World Cup finals.
