Vandalia

Town and administrative headquarters of Fayette County, south-central Illinois; population (1990) 6,100. It is situated on the Kaskaskia River, 48 km/30 mi southwest of Effingham. An agricultural distribution centre, Vandalia served as the second state capital from 1820–39. Abraham Lincoln began his legal career here in 1834. Vandalia was a station on the Underground Railroad (a network for escaped slaves).

Town in Montgomery County, southwest Ohio; population (1990) 13,900. It is a residential suburb, 13 km/8 mi north of Dayton. Its economy centres around truck farms and the manufacture of automobile parts. It is the site of the Trapshooting Hall of Fame.
