Redgrave, Vanessa (1937– )

English actor. She has played Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra on the stage, Ellida in Ibsen's Lady From the Sea (1976 and 1979), and Olga in Chekhov's Three Sisters (1990). She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the title role in the film Julia (1977), about an activist killed by the Nazis prior to World War II.

Other films include Isadora (1968), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), Wetherby (1985), Howards End (1992), A Month by the Lake (1995), and Girl, Interrupted (2000). Other stage plays include Heartbreak House (1992) and Vita and Virginia (1994), and television films include They (1993) and Down Came a Blackbird (1995). She won a Tony Award for her performance in Long Day's Journey into Night (2003).

She is the daughter of actor Michael Redgrave and the sister of actor Lynn Redgrave.
