Vannes

Seaport and capital of the French département of Morbihan; population (1999) 51,800. The industries include shipbuilding and tourism, and the manufacture of woollen fabrics, rope, tyres, and agricultural machinery. Medieval ramparts enclose the inner city, and there is a cathedral with a 16th-century chapel.

Vannes is named after the Celtic Veneti tribe, whose capital was on the site.
