Varga, Tibor (1921– )

Hungarian, later British, violinist. He studied at the Budapest Music Academy with Hubay and later with Flesch. From 1939 to 1943 he studied philosophy at Budapest University, and since 1949 he has been professor of violin at the Detmold Music Academy. He was best known for his playing of modern music, for example the concertos by Blacher (first performance, 1950), Bartók, and Schoenberg. He founded his own chamber orchestra in 1954 which he conducted until 1988.
