Vargas, Luis de

Vargas, Luis de (1502–1568)

Castilian painter. He spent almost 30 years in Italy, where he was deeply influenced by the work of Giorgio Vasari. On returning to Spain about 1550, he introduced the art of fresco painting to Seville. His finest work is the Nativity Altar in Seville Cathedral.

Vargas was born in Seville and trained in Rome.
