Varnay, Astrid (1918–2006)

US soprano, of Swedish origin. Admired internationally, especially for her Wagnerian roles, she made her first Metropolitan Opera appearance (in Die Walküre) in 1941 and her last in 1974.

Varnay was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Taken to the USA in childhood, she studied first with her mother.
