Varnedoe, (John) Kirk (Train) (1946– )

US museum curator and teacher. He headed the department of painting and sculpture of the Museum of Modern Art, and in addition to his numerous articles and lectures on art topics, he became known for his imaginative exhibits. Varnedoe was born in Savannah, Georgia. He studied at Williams College (BA) and Stanford (MA, PhD), later teaching at Stanford (1973–77), Columbia University (1974–80), and at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (1980–88).
