Varnhagen von Ense, Carl August (1785–1858)

German writer. His main works are biographies, such as lives of Goethe 1823 and General von Bülow 1853, and the five-volume Biographische Denkmäle 1824–30.

In 1814 he married Rahel Levin, who gathered round her the chief literary figures of the day. His correspondence with her, and with the Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle, has been published.
