Varvoglis, Mario (1885–1967)

Greek composer. He studied painting at first, then music in Paris with Xavier Leroux and Caussade from 1904 and d'Indy from 1913, having his first successes there. He returned to Greece in 1922, became professor at the Athens Conservatory, and in 1924 at the Hellenic Conservatory, of which he became director with Evangelatos in 1947.

the one-act opera The Afternoon of Love (1935, produced 1944); classical Greek plays.

Orchestral and chamber

Pastoral Suite (1912), Meditation, and incidental music to prelude, chorale, and fugue on BACH for strings; chamber music; piano works; songs.
