Vasilenko, Sergey Nikiforovich

Vasilenko, Sergey Nikiforovich (1872–1956)

Russian composer, conductor, and teacher. After receiving private lessons from Gretchaninov and Konius whilst studying law, he entered the Moscow Conservatory in 1895, where he studied composition with Taneyev and Ippolitov-Ivanov. He started teaching there in 1905 and was soon appointed professor. He organized and conducted historical concerts.

Stage works

operas The Legend of the Holy City of Kitezh (1902), The Son of the Sun (1929), Christopher Columbus (1933), Suvarov (1941); ballets Joseph the Beautiful (1925), The Gypsies (after Pushkin).

Orchestral

five symphonies (1904–47), Epic Poem, symphonic poem on Oscar Wilde's The Garden of Death, suite In the Sun, Three Bloody Battles (after Tolstoy), violin concerto (1913), and other orchestral works.

Vocal

cantata for the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution; songs and folksong arrangements.

Chamber

four string quartets, woodwind quartet, piano trio and other chamber music; viola and piano sonata.
