Vatutin, Nikolai A (1901–1944)

Soviet general. Appointed commander of the Southwest Front 1942 he took part in the action at Stalingrad; he attempted an offensive but was soundly defeated by von Manstein. After this he conducted a successful defence of the southern sector of the Kursk salient and then counterattacked to Kharkov and liberated much of the Ukraine. A further advance liberated Kiev, but he was ambushed by anti-Soviet partisans near Rovno February 1945 and fatally wounded.
