Vaughan, Herbert Alfred (1832–1903)

English Roman Catholic cleric who, as archbishop of Westminster 1892–1903, was responsible for the construction of Westminster Cathedral, which began in 1894. He was made a cardinal in 1893.

Vaughan was chosen as the bishop of Salford in 1872 and, 20 years later, succeeded Cardinal Henry Manning at Westminster. During his tenure of the post, he founded St Joseph's College for foreign missions at Mill Hill. Westminster Cathedral, which was completed just before his death, was designed in the Byzantine style by the architect J F Bentley.
