Vedda

Member of any of the aboriginal peoples of Sri Lanka, who occupied the island before the arrival of the Aryans about 550 BC. Formerly cave-dwelling hunter-gatherers, they have now almost died out or merged with the dominant Sinhalese and Tamil populations. They speak a Sinhalese language, belonging to the Indo-European family.

They live mainly in the central highlands, and many practise shifting cultivation.
