Vegh, Sándor (1905-1997)

Hungarian conductor and violinist. He was the founder and leader of the Vegh Quartet 1940-80, making world tours with performances of works by Bartók and Beethoven.

He studied in Budapest with Jenö Hubay and Zoltán Kodály. He played in the Hungarian String Quartet 1935-40, giving the European first performance of Bartók's 5th string quartet in 1936. He performed with Casals and others at the Prades Festival 1953-69, and directed the Sándor Vegh Chamber Orchestra 1968-71. From 1971 he taught at Salzburg and was director of the Camerata there from 1979. He founded the International seminar at Prussia Cove, Cornwall, in 1972, and conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in London in 1990.
