Velsen

Town in the province of North Holland, Netherlands, 24 km/15 mi northwest of Amsterdam; population (1996) 65,500. Velsen lies opposite IJmuiden at the seaward end of the North Sea Canal, which leads to Amsterdam. There is a major iron and steelworks.
