Velva

Small town in McHenry County, central North Dakota; population (1990) 1,000. It is situated on the Souris (Mouse) River, 32 km/20 mi southeast of Minot. It has lignite mines and trades in poultry, livestock, and grain. It is the birthplace of broadcast journalist Eric Sevareid (1912), who wrote of his boyhood in Velva. The town was originally laid out in 1891.
