Venda

Former independent homeland Black National State within South Africa, independent from 1979 (but not recognized by the United Nations) until 1994 when it was re-integrated into South Africa, in Northern Province; area 6,500 sq km/2,510 sq mi. Towns and cities include Makwarela, Makhade, and Sibasa. Its main industries are coal, copper, graphite, and construction stone. Luvenda and English are spoken here.
