Venosa

Town in Basilicata region, southern Italy, 35 km/22 mi north of Potenza; population (1991) 11,900. There is a trade in agricultural produce. It has a 15th-century cathedral. Venosa was an important Roman base for operations against the Carthaginian general Hannibal and Pyrrhus, King of Epirus. The Roman poet Horace was born here.
