Venturi tube

Device for measuring the rate of fluid flow through a pipe. It consists of a tube with a constriction (narrowing) in the middle of its length. The constriction causes a drop in pressure in the fluid flowing in the pipe. A pressure gauge attached to the constriction measures the pressure drop and this is used to find the rate of fluid flow.

Venturi tubes are also used in the carburettor of a motor car to draw petrol into the engine.
