Verdelot, Philippe

    0.02 sec.

Verdelot, Philippe (c. 1470–c. 1552)

French composer. His sacred music includes two Masses, about 57 motets, and a Magnificat, and was popular throughout Europe, but he was admired chiefly for his nine volumes of madrigals. He was one of the first composers to write madrigals (he was writing them as early as the 1520s), and influenced other madrigalists.

Verdelot was born in northern France. He went to Italy, probably at an early age, and was maestro at the baptistry in Florence 1523–25 and at Florence Cathedral 1523–27.

His motets were parodied by other composers, including Roland de Lassus and Palestrina.
