Verdigris River

River in southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma; length 565 km/351 mi. The Verdigris rises southwest of Emporia, and empties into the Arkansas River 8 km/5 mi northeast of Muskogee. The river gets its name from the green colour certain copper ores impart to it.

From its source, the Verdigris flows southeast through Toronto Lake (an artificial reservoir), then southeast past Neodesha - where it is joined from the west by the Fall River - to Coffeyville. Entering Oklahoma, it runs south through Oologah Lake, and around the eastern edge of Tulsa (through the city's port of Catoosa, on the Arkansas River Navigation System) to its junction with the Arkansas River, just upstream from the mouth of the Neosho River.
