Vereeniging

Town in Gauteng province, South Africa, 56 km/35 mi south of Johannesburg on the Vaal River; population (district, 1991) 250,500. A manufacturing centre, it is also one of the most important coalmining areas in South Africa. Iron and steel works, large electric power stations and other industries are located here. An Anglo-Boer peace conference took place in Vereeniging in 1902, following the end of the Second South African War.
