Veress, Sándor (1907–1992)

Hungarian pianist and composer. He began collecting folk songs in 1929, and settled at Budapest as a teacher of piano and composition and assistant to Bartók at the Scientific Academy of Folk Music.

Veress learnt the piano from his mother and later entered the Budapest Conservatory. He also studied with Bartók and Kodály. In 1929 he studied at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin and began collecting folk songs.

the ballet The Miraculous Pipe (1937, produced Rome 1941).

Orchestral

two symphonies (1940, 1953) and divertimento for orchestra; violin concerto (1939); Hommage à Paul Klee for orchestra (1952); clarinet concerto (1982); flute concerto (1989); Concerto for two trombones (1989).

Choral and chamber

cantata and folk song arranged for unaccompanied chorus; two string quartets (1931, 1937), string trio, trio for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon; violin and piano sonata, cello and piano sonata; two piano sonatas.
