| In Roman mythology, a girl who was killed by her father to protect her from the lust of a Roman magistrate. Her death prompted a revolution, concluded by the publication of a law code, the Twelve Tables. Her story was told by both the Italian poet Petrarch and the English poet Chaucer in the Middle Ages. |
